Cancellieri Displays Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Haywire Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was far from happy during the weekend fixture. Lazio were trailing against Torino, an opponent that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their most recent five league matches. Ultras from the Curva Nord were finishing their ongoing dissent in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.

A Season Unraveling?

Had their campaign unraveling, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure to start with? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri to lead the team in the summer transfer window, only for him admitted that the management had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were about to receive for fiscal problems. Rumours that he might quit were without basis, but he did say that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio became as messy in their performances as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the rest of their initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. At any given moment, observers have struggled to determine if they are improving or self-destructing.

Matteo's Surprising Presence

One individual remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to be at Lazio this season. He spent the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were advocating for him to remain there a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to thin their squad lacking backup options.

Cancellieri arrived in the first place under Sarri's first spell, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, would later accuse Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri was destined for stardom but then not selecting him."

Discovering His Best Role

It's possible the coach was still trying to determine the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Originally described as a flank player on arrival, Cancellieri nevertheless spent the majority of that term as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings while playing for Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
