The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to punish US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
