Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The figure of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to release September’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Costs increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
