Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through dieting generally have a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs explains the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," said an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss hinges on integrated lifestyle support.
